As a child, I played along the banks of a creek in my hometown of Flourtown, Pennsylvania, in the ruins of the gristmills that were once the hub of the area’s economy. Inside the buildings I created forts with my friends while imagining what life had been like for those who worked and lived there some two centuries earlier. The structures—which even then represented to me what was grounded and real—were forever etched in my memory.

I created Gristmill Builders in Stowe, Vermont, in 1992 with the image of those strong, durable structures of my childhood in mind. But more than that, I wanted to help people create the special places that will affect not only their own lives, but the lives of those around them. Long before the so-called “green movement” was even named, Gristmill was creating quality homes that incorporated our mission of sustainability and conscientious construction.
